Privacy Policy

Who we are

VBT: The Visual Bible (“VBT,” “we,” “us”) is a product of Sojourner LLC, operating the website at https://www.thevbt.com (TheVBT.com). This policy describes how we handle personal information when you use the site or reader.

What we collect

• Account data: such as email address and name when you sign up or sign in.
• Reading progress: information tied to your account so we can sync your place in the library.
• Circles and shared content: group participation, roles, display names, and content you share, such as questions, replies, lessons, suggestions, and shared annotations.
• Community safety: reports, the reporting and reported accounts, report reasons and details, relevant content captured for review, review outcomes, your Circle blocking preferences, and the community policy version and time you explicitly accepted.
• Billing: subscription and purchase status are processed by our payment provider (Stripe). We do not store full card numbers on our servers.
• Technical data: such as IP address, device/browser type, and security logs as needed to run and protect the service.

How we use information

We use the above to provide and improve the reader, authenticate you, process payments, send service-related emails (such as password reset when enabled), protect against abuse, and comply with law.

Circles, reports, and blocking

Content you share in a Circle is available to others according to the Circle's access controls and their roles. Safety reports and the captured content are available to authorized VBT staff for review and are not posted to the Circle. Reporting does not automatically remove the reported content.

Blocking hides a person's shared contributions from your view in that Circle. It does not remove them or change group roles. Your block list stores the account and display name needed to manage your choices.

Cookies and local storage

We use cookies and similar technologies for sign-in sessions, preferences (for example theme), and security. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling some cookies may limit sign-in or features.

Service providers

We rely on trusted third-party service providers for hosting, database infrastructure, payment processing, and transactional email. Each provider is bound by data processing agreements and their own privacy policies. We select providers that meet or exceed industry-standard security practices.

Retention

We keep information as long as needed to operate the service and meet legal obligations. You may request account deletion where applicable; some records may be retained where required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as billing disputes).

You can request account deletion from your account settings. Deletion removes your personal account data and blocking records. Some shared Circle contributions remain so the group's study can continue, with your account attribution removed or replaced by “Deleted reader.” The content you shared may still contain information that identifies you.

Deletion removes reports you submitted. For reports about your deleted account, it removes the captured evidence and free-text report details, replaces your account attribution, and replaces any existing resolution note with an anonymization notice. The remaining moderation record, including its reason and status, may be retained for community safety. If a deleted account reviewed a report, its reviewer attribution is removed.

Children

The service is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us at bp@sojourn.llc.

California residents — CCPA rights

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives you specific rights:

• Right to Know: You may request what personal information we have collected, the sources, our business purpose, and the categories of third parties we share it with.
• Right to Delete: You may request deletion of personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
• Right to Opt-Out (Do Not Sell): We do not sell your personal information for monetary consideration. If this changes, we will update this policy and provide an opt-out mechanism.
• Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

EU/EEA residents — GDPR rights

If you are located in the European Union or European Economic Area, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):

• Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Rectification: Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
• Erasure: Request deletion of your data, subject to legal obligations.
• Portability: Receive your data in a portable, machine-readable format.
• Object: Object to certain processing activities.
• Withdraw consent: Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it at any time.

Legal basis for processing: We process your data based on (1) performance of a contract — fulfilling your subscription or account; (2) legitimate interests — security, fraud prevention, and improving the service; and (3) consent — where you have opted in to marketing communications.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do; continued use of the site after changes means you accept the updated policy.
